Jase Zappel Chapter 2 Key Terms/Points The more deficient you are in communicating, the more likely you will experience negative things in your life. Communication competence- the extent to which persons achieve desired outcomes through communication acceptable to the situation Appropriateness- communication which fits into a context Rules- prescriptions you can follow for what should or should not be done in a given type of situation You know a rule exists if you have violated it. The reaction from a broken rule is called a sanction Effectiveness- the extent to which communication comes to valued outcomes Effective communication does not always mean having a completely satisfying outcome The Competence Grid: Innapropriate and Ineffective= minimizing communication Appropriate but innefective= sufficing communication Inappropriate but effective= maximizing communication Appropriate and effective= optimizing communication Means-oriented codes- what behaviors are considered moral or immoral, despite the outcome Ends-oriented code- when the outcome is moral or immoral, despite the
