Jase Zappel Comm103 Book Notes CHAPTER 1 Key Terms Competent- being both apropriate and effective in the given situation Appropriate- acting in ways suitable to the social norms and expectations of a situation Effective- being able to achieve the most desireable objectives or outcomes in the context All of these can change given the situation Communication- process of managing messages and media for the purpose of creating meaning Messages- any way in which we use to interact, both verbal and nonverbal Symbol- a word, sound, or gesture that refers to something else Referent- what a symbol is reffering to What we call something is a product of history, sulture, and our ability to communicae these arbitrary labels we place on things Language- a verbal symbol system that allows us to take messages and utterances and translate them into meaning Nonverbal symbols- the sounds, gestures, or actions that people agree have common meaning (such as rolling your eyes) Media- any means through which symbols are transmitted and meanings
