Philosophy 20A Hannen 11/07/07 Existence of transcendental realm Affinity between the soul and the body Affinity to the form Soul is life, something that exists in non-temporal being Critical step forward from Euthyphro, Socrates quest for definitions is vindicated b/c there are objects of definitions but can’t be particulars of this world Has to be stable fixed eternal essential form that is the object Socrates is trying to grasp in his definitions Metaphysical revolution, some dimension of reality Homer – men dying on battlefields and their souls leave there body like smoke The souls of the dead are described in Greek myths as shadows of yourself Something that is dispersed once one dies Not enough just to prove that is exists, must prove soul has some capabilities and intelligence Socrates about to drink poison, isn’t scared, is in relief, thinks he will benefit in the afterlife, has separated himself from the bodily needs of life, won’t
