Philosophy 20A Hannen 10/24/07 Socrates and Plato Understanding relations Plato is a great synthesizer Fixed, stable character Quest for definitions, characteristic feature is that there is some kind of knowledge Socrates always ends up undermining the definitions, proving them wrong Typically no answer to question posed Plato giving slices as philosophy as an active pursuit of truth which much of the time fails, risk of failure is as great as the rate of success Socrates has implicitly defined that before you can know that it is X you have to know the definition Eidos – form; idea; shape; pattern; essence Metaphysical realism – something that is the pious, just, right, beautiful, etc Socrates is always arguing that in the structure of reality there is always that thing that we are trying to define Socrates concerned with practical philosophy Things have a stable fixed character (Heraclitus thought didn’t exist) Plato is a great synthesizer b/c he wanted to prove it in a way to reconcile that there are things that have a stable fixed character Looking for general explanations, general, theories Socrates quest for definitions is part of the above See metaphysical issue; is there such a thing as quality of things? – Plato
