Black Studies 1 Lipsitz 12/04/2007 Crossroads Make right decision at crossroads because when you make one choice the other door is closed forever Same thing can cure can kill you Important to use all of your tools to negotiate problems that come your way Two major historical crossroads – creation and betrayal of abolition democracy Social warrant of justice under law Produced amendments that put the first permanent commitment to equal rights and equality Promise of abolition democracy was betrayed because amendments were not enforced, Jim Crow and sharecropping replaced slavery, blacks were unfit for freedom, given low wages, wander around looking for job = vagrancy, not enough money so stay in one spot = loitering Ruth Wilson Gilmore, only thing that a black man can get arrested for is either moving or standing still this produces social death Life is so meaningless at any moment you can be killed by oppressor Black community = under policed, black on black crime not cared about
