4/21/08 Baldwin Soc 152A How to decrease risk of STDs – condoms, dry sex (manual stimulation, body rubbing) Sexually active gays and bisexuals should be tested for HIV, gonorrhea, Chlamydia and syphilis at least once a year and vaccinated for hep a and b Don’t douche (unless MD says you should) because of high sick of bacterial vaginosis, PID, Aids, etc. AIDS – acquired immune deficiency syndrome It takes about ten years for HIV to cause aids (usually 8 -11) ¼ of people with HIV don’t know they have HIV PWA = person with aids Is much gentler then “AIDS victim” or “AIDS patient” 25% of PWA’s contracted HIV before 20 … being young doesn’t protect you VIDEO about people with AIDS Protease inhibitors (combined with AZT, 3TC, etc … reduce most peoples AIDS symptoms Triple threat o HIV enters a cell o AZT and 3tc disrupt an early stage of virus reproductions o Protease inhibitors block final stage of reproduction o As a result, no additional virus is produced
