Soc 152A Baldwin 4/09/08 Social Learning Theory: during human evolution, increases brain cortex size led to increased learning capacity Cortex = part of brain for learning, memory and thought In humans learning can cover up almost all biological differences in male and female behavior The learning of sexual behavior and gender roles Sexual Behavior Masturbation – many kids discover this by age 2 o The explore touching their bodies – a natural act for babies o Touch to the genitals = (+) a biologically wired-in pleasure (primary reinforcer) o Leading to their repeating this type of touching (operant learning) o Multiple repetitions lead to increased chances of orgasm Punishment suppresses behavior Punishment for masturbation comes from various sources such as: parents, accidental sources, mechanical devices Old view = masturbation led to insanity New view = old mental hospitals (in 1800’s) led to patients masturbation Today masturbation is seen as normal and natural
