Purpose In Week 1, the purpose is to synthesize and purify one of the two unknown complexes. During Week 2, the purpose is to determine the identity of 5 cobalt complexes by measuring each ones wavelengths. Results and Discussion Week 1 To prepare complex B, an ice-water bath was obtained. 20 mL of acetone was obtained in a beaker and then placed into the bath. Four grams of ammonium chloride was mixed with 10 mL of distilled water in a 50 mL beaker. The solution was then gently warmed until the ammonium chloride was dissolved. The solution was then brought to a boil. 5 grams of cobalt salt, which is magenta, was then added to the boiling solution. The solution turned to a deep blue color. .309g of activated charcoal was then obtained and placed into a beaker. The hot solution was added to activated charcoal while stirring. The contents were then put into an ice bath. 15 mL of concentrated aqueous ammonia was then added to the beaker. The solution was stirred. The solution turned greenish. The
