Purpose The purpose is to examine the chemical recycling of aluminum. Also to maximize the percent yield. The aluminum will be recycled into alum. Results and Discussion Week 1 First the aluminum can was cut into a square weighing .993 grams. The square was then cut into small strips. The glassware was rinsed. 50 mL of KOH was added to aluminum strips in the fume hood on the hot plate. Allow aluminum and KOD to be on the hot plate for thirty minutes. There was bubbling and condensation forming on the sides of the beaker. The clear solution begins to turn black after about ten minutes. The glassware for the gravity filtration was then rinsed. The solid was then filtered through to get just the liquid. 20 mL of 9 M H 2 SO 4 was then obtained. 5 mL of the sulfuric acid was added to the filtered solution while it was being heated and stirring.
