Psych 1 Fridlund 2/07/08 Classical Conditioning Operant Conditioning (instrumental learning) Watson – Little Albert B.F. Skinner – classical cant account for but a part of what we do, says most of our learning isn’t conditioning we are the actors in our environment, active not reactive Classical conditioning presupposes a passive creature Instead animals act to change their environments Much of animal learning isn’t reflexive but adaptive and flexible Such adaptive learning is controlled by its consequences Thorndike’s Law of Effect S---R consequence An organism whose actions lead to a satisfying state of affairs is likely to repeat those actions An organism whose actions lead to an “annoying” state of affairs in unlikely to repeat those actions Animals do it by trial and error, no point of insight Humans learn by insight but a lot of what we do is learning by trial and error, the slow build up of association Invented the spelling drill, practice words over and over until you learn it
