Biblical Studies February 27, 2007 Unit 4: Life, Death, Renewal in the Promise Land: 1 & 2 Kings=Decline (After David) 1 King = Solomon 2 King= Collapse on N. Kingdom to Assyria Covenant = 4 th  Covenant with David.  Davidic dynasty, monarchy  everlasting.    Idea develops: during 6 th  century before Jesus: a new David is going to  come, son of David.  Covenant with David resumed.  To restore monarchy.  Jesus executed as revolutionary king.  “King of Jews”  Unit 4:   E, F, G 1 / 2 Samuel –Continues message of Judges, more Sagas…in these books,  loose tribal confederation becomes united kingdom under single  monarchy.  Saul and David set up makeshift throne, and 2 judges who  become king. What’s going on in the ancient world at this time?  (Trojan War, Eliad)  *homogeneous warrior society.   Samuel and Saul=1 st  Samuel, stories of David 1 Samuel and 2 Samuel  end in beginning of 1 st  Kings.
