Chapter 2: Power Politics Week 2-4 1. (Political) Realism is a school of thought that explains international relations in terms of power. a. Realism was created in reaction to a liberal tradition called idealism b. Idealism emphasizes international law, morality, and international organizations, rather than power alone i. Idealists believe that human nature is basically good and the international system as a community of states rather than an anarchy ii. i.e. the time between WWI and WWII with the League of Nations c. Realism was used during the Cold War for containment and not to appease the Soviet Union and China i. Found with Sun Tzu’s The Art of War ii. Found in ancient Greece with Thucydides about the Peloponnesian War iii. “the strong do what they have the power to do and the weak accept what they have to accept” d. Realists believe we have to act within our self-interest i. Therefore the Iraq war and Vietnamese war were both not really in our self- interest ii. Neoconservatives
