The Maine blew up After it blew up, there was a saying, “Remember the Maine, to hell with Spain”. Newspapers in Spain stated that the Maine was blown up by accident, internally. It is believed in Cuba that the Americans blew up the Maine. It was blown up as a conspiracy, as a way to blame Spain and spring up a war. It is highly unlikely that the Spanish blew up the ship that would spring up a war which Spain was so desperately trying to avoid. I. U.S. Position a. Spain must end the re-concentration system b. Spain must agree to a cease-fire in Cuba c. Spain must agree to peace talks with Cuban rebels (with American participation) d. Spain must agree to some formula for independence of Cuba. I. Treaty of Paris II. Spain gave up its sovereignty over Cuba III. Spain ceded Guam, Puerto Rico, and Philippines to US IV. US paid Spain 20,000,000 June 22, 2007 Class Notes: a. The Teller Amendment- the U.S. could not annex Cuba but only leave “control of the island to its people.” b. The Platt Amendment - stipulated the conditions for the withdrawal of United States troops remaining in Cuba since the Spanish-American War, and defined the terms of Cuban-U.S. relations until 1934. The amendment ceded to the United States the naval base in Cuba (Guantánamo Bay), stipulated that Cuba would not transfer Cuban land to any power other than the United States, mandated that Cuba would contract no foreign debt without guarantees that the interest could be
