 Chapter Seventeen  | Section Eight Behavioral medicine  – integration of behavioral and medical knowledge, applied to  health and disease Health psychology  – provides psychology’s contribution to behavioral medicine Stress and Illness Stressors are what cause a stress reaction Stress is the process by which we appraise and cope with environmental threats and  challenges Stress Response system is part of a unified mind-body system; also a system on orders  from the cerebral cortex, the outer part of the adrenal gland secreting the stress hormone  cortisol General Adaptation Syndrome – Selye’s concept of the body’s adaptive response to  stress as composed of three stages: 1. alarm 2. resistance 3. exhaustion Stressful life events include: 1. catastrophes  2. significant life changes  3. daily hassles burnout  – physically, emotional, and mental exhaustion brought on by persistent job-
