Josh Landsman Survey of Jewish Civilization Compare the Treatment of the Jews in Western Europe to Those in Eastern Europe in the 19 th Century The treatment of the Jews in western Europe and Eastern Europe during the 19 th century were very different. In western Europe, for the most part, the Jews were accepted as equals in society. While in eastern Europe, the Jews were often oppressed and even sometimes attacked for simply being Jewish. One of the reasons for this significant difference in treatment was the fact that the Enlightenment had spread to western Europe. The Enlightenment preached equality for all man. This helped the Jews in western Europe but still did not allow them to play a role in government. Jews received equality in places like England and France, but were oppressed in places like Russia, Poland, and Romania. The majority of the Jews of Russia and Poland in the 19 th Century lived very tragic lives. A specific even that sparked a mass following of anti-Semitism took place on March 1, 1881. Tsar Alexander II was assassinated by a group of radicals. Though there was only one Jew in the group, the single Jew was used as a scapegoat to target the Jews in Russia. Jewish towns were attacked and looted. Jews were beaten and in some
