Chudry1 Affera Chudry Prof. Wilkowski ENGL 1201 EC July 16 th , 2007 The City of Death Spain: The country of love, the county of culture, the country of a flourishing economy. However, the county was not always as beautiful and serene as it is viewed today. In 1541, during the Gothic Era, dark times fell on this radiant country, which has been captured by Domenikos Theotocopoulos, better known to us as El- Greco . View of Toledo, by El- Greco, an oil painting that represents the downfall of an aristocratic society, the renouncement of religion which includes the choices we make in life. The painter is able to do so through color imagery, position of the buildings, and the split in the river. Toledo was once a flourishing capital of the Spanish Empire. Both trade and culture reached their height in this city. The river shown in the picture is the Tagus River; a river that was once, the very life line of this city. It was their economic source for fishing and for irrigation. However, the painting tells a different tale. The darkened gloomy sky brings forth a gothic, depressed atmosphere. It seems as if a storm has passed through; A storm that wiped away all happiness from the once bright and luminous city. The rustic landscape is evidence that a soul has not stepped foot on this land in a while. The painting as a whole symbolizes the downfall of an aristocratic society.
