Chudry 1 Affera Chudry Prof. Wilkowski ENGL 1201 EC 07-29-07 Legalizing Medical Marijuana A Leading Controversy It has been long believed by the general consensus that marijuana was simply a drug used by criminals and addicts. It was also believed that this smoked drug was very popular with teens, and its purpose was purely harmful to the mind and body. However, recently, researchers have provided sound evidence of the beneficial properties of marijuana, but mainly of THC, its main component. Studies show marijuana can be used for medical purposes, and can help aid in treatments of many popular diseases. Personally, I believe legalization of marijuana is beneficial due to that it treats many ailments, saves lives. The benefits outweigh the harm, and this is why it should be legalized. Firstly, marijuana can be dried flowers, leaves, and stems of the cannabis sativa plant 1 . The main ingredient of this plant is Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. Marijuana is usually smoked using a pipe or a joint; however, recent studies done by The Institute of Medicine show that it can also be consumed within foods. Prior to 1937, at least twenty seven medicines contained marijuana and were legally available in the United Stated; many were allowed by well known companies such as Squibb and Eli Lilly 2 .
