LARC Spring 2007 Hum Core 1C Tutor: Anna Khalaj Lecture 9: Cross-Cultural and Intra-Galactic Communication Main points: - Captain Picard and the Tamarian, Dathan, encounter a language barrier when they attempt to communicate with one another. - The Tamarian captain understands more than Picard, initially. - This initial difficulty in communication is overcome through patience, mental capacity, and a willingness to understand one another: o Patience + imagination = communication o Remember that they need to be able to understand each other’s narratives in order to communicate. - They are taking a risk because their actions can be interpreted as acts of war; one misspoken word can result in tragedy. o The symbol of war (the dagger) becomes a sign of peaceful cooperation - Finally, Captain Picard realizes that the Tamarian communicates “by metaphor,” or by citing examples. In order to communicate with the Tamarian, Captain Picard must learn the narrative: o The Tamarians use narrative imagery without individual identity
