English 102 4/9/2008 Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem, "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" is a nightmarish tale of a sailor and his voyage to the south pole. Coleridge's poem, however, does display many elements of romanticism. Throughout the poem, the natural world seems to be a character in itself, based on how it interacts with the ancient mariner. It is through both the natural world and the spiritual world that the elements of romanticism is displayed. The poem begins with three wedding guests traveling to a wedding party. Then an unnamed ancient mariner being described as an unnaturally old and skinny, with deeply-tanned skin and a "glittering eye" stops one of the men and compels him to listen to his tale. The wedding guest resists, but is spellbound by the eye of the old sea-faring man, and is constrained to hear his tale. One day when he was younger, the Ancient Mariner set sail with two hundred other sailors from his native land. The day was sunny and clear, and all were in good cheer until the ship reached the equator. Suddenly, a terrible storm hit and drove the ship southwards into a "rime" - a strange, icy patch of ocean. The towering, echoing "rime" was bewildering and impenetrable, and also desolate until an Albatross appeared out of the mist. The Albatross is seen as a good omen, as it gave the sailors good wind, and shortly after they fed the Albatross, the ice broke away and they were able to steer through, but there was a strange mist that also followed.
