CPU – central processing unit . Electronic component on a computer’s motherboard that interprets and carries out the basic instructions that operate the computer. Also called a processor. GU I – graphical user interface . Type of user interface that allows a user to interact with software using text, graphics, and visual images, such as icons. PDA – personal digital assistant . One of the more popular lightweight mobile devices in use today, providing personal organizer functions such as a calendar, appointment book, address book, calculator, and notepad. Embedded Computer – Special-purpose computer that functions as a component in a larger product. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Domain Name – Text version of an IP address. Portal ( ) – Web site that offers a variety of Internet services from a single, convenient location. Wiki – Collaborative Web site that allows users to create, add to, modify, or delete the Web site content via their Web browser. E-commerce – Short for electronic commerce, a business transaction that occurs over an electronic network such as the Internet. 3 types: B2C – Business-to-consumer, sale of goods and services to general public. C2C – Consumer- to-consumer, one consumer sells directly to another. E.g. eBay B2B – Business-to-business, business providing goods and services to other businesses FTP – File T ransfer Protocol. Worksheet – Rows and columns used to organize data in a spreadsheet. Spreadsheet software allows users to organize data in rows and columns and perform calculations on the data. 4 features of spreadsheet programs: a) Spreadsheet organization: i) Columns identified by letters ii) Rows identified by numbers iii) A cell is the intersection of a column and row b) Calculations: A function is a predefined formula that performs common calculations. c) Recalculations d) Charting capabilities: allows you to display spreadsheet data in graphical form....
