Chana Kutnicki Philosophy 101 3 Arguments which set out to prove God’s Existence/ Criticisms Ontological Argument - Anselm o God is the greatest being o The greatest being doesn’t exist in reality (false) C1- God Doesn’t Exist o The greatest being exits as a concept o If the greatest being exists as a concept its possible it exists in reality o Existing in reality is greater than existing as a concept C2- The greatest being that exists as a concept alone is less great than the greatest being that exists in reality- ABSURD/ CONTRADICTION! If something is the greatest being then it exists in reality o God is the greatest being ( god exists in reality) Criticisms of Ontological Argument - o Kant- Existence isn’t a predicate (define a concept or picks it out) o Only predicates are great making properties (if existence isn’t a predicate than it can’t make one thing greater than another) Existing in reality isn’t greater than existing as a concept alone. o Gannilo- lets say that existing in reality is greater than existing as a concept. If something’s the greatest island, then it exists in reality. o There’s the concept of the greatest beagle The greatest beagle exists in reality. o
