SPATIAL COGNITION: 1. Parietal cortex: spatial attention. a. Spatial coordinate systems or spatial reference frames b. Hemisphere differences INTRA PARIETAL SPACES (visual   motor movement): VIP:  perioral space AIP:  visuo/motor; involved in grasping MIP:  visual, somatotopic, involved in reaching, visual RFs move with hands, expand for tools LIP:  respond to onset of stimuli, show delay firing like PFC 1. VIP: Ventral intra parietal (Perioral space—around the mouth, face  space) a. You have receptor fields around your mouth and face which activate when something is moving towards your mouth (i.e. ball) and allows you to duck as well as respond to touch. The visual and tactile elements have similar movement direction tuning. b. Peripheral attention : you can also respond to a ball coming at you from the side. You use your vision to predict the trajectory it would hit your face and thus you protect that area (body- centered space). These cells help you in martial arts when you are blocking things from off to the side. c. Connected to F4 (Frontal area 4): controls head/ mouth areas so you can duck your head or grasp with your mouth (in case you want to catch a bullet with your teeth) d. *Head movement/ grasping with mouth. 2. AIP: Anterior Intra parietal (object shape) a. Anterior intra parietal space helps you create motor responses to reach out and grab objects (i.e. you grasp differently for a coke bottle than a sandwich). Without it you just kind of slump at the object and don’t grasp at it in a specific way.
