Amber Chambers Anthro 106 March 6, 2008 Response Paper 4 In Her Own Time by Barbara Myerhoff, focuses on her research into Orthodox Jewish life. In this film, we can see many rituals performed by the Jews, such as the cleansing ritual performed after a period without intercourse. Outside appearance is also mentioned in the film, referring to Barbara’s “Jewish hair.” The point of view is Barbara’s as this is “self-reflexive” ethnography. She uses her voice, actions, and experiences to tell the story of the Jews. Some of her Jewish friends and contacts state their point of view but usually only upon prompting from Barbara. We mostly just see Barbara’s perspectives. She is an “outsider” trying to become and “insider” and therefore we see more of her thoughts and opinions than that of the Jews. When we do hear the view of the Jews, she often states her own opinion of that perspective. For example, after the cleansing ritual, she tells the viewer how it made her feel. This is nice because it gives us a first-hand account of the feeling. However, her
