2IntroductionIn the ancient world, laws were used as a way of ensuring that individuals in society areliving and acting in accordance with the social order. Some of the laws that were applied insociety include the code of Hammurabi and the law of Twelve Tables. The law of Twelve Tablesconsisted of a set of laws written on twelve bronze tablets. The laws were used to pass certainjudgments in an attempt to make sure that residents of various regions adhere to the governmentlaws1. This paper explores the application and the contribution of the code of Hammurabi and theRoman Law of Twelve Tables between 476 and 1640 AD.The law of the Twelve Tables had a major contribution to the governance andadministration of the Roman republic. Before the establishment of the laws, the roman empirewas characterized by a lot of battles and conflicts. However, the establishment andimplementation of the twelve table laws in the Roman republic brought unity and positive socialinteractions among Romans between 476-1640 AD2. The laws were shown openly to each andevery Roman resident. The residents were supposed to comprehend these laws and ensure thattheir behaviors and actions were in accordance with the established laws. Another majorcontribution of the laws of Twelve Tables in the Roman republic is that they changed the lawenforcement practices.
