COMM 103 Fall 2007 Study Guide for Chapter 9 Understand the following concepts and terms well enough to be able to answer true/false, multiple choice, and matching questions about them. Exam questions may ask you identify terms and apply them to hypothetical situations. Good luck! 1. Know the characteristics of a small group (3 or more people, shared perception, interdependence on goal, behavior and context, requires communication) 2. Know Tuckman’s four stages of group orientation (forming- meeting and understanding goals/tasks, storming-conflicting and decision making, norming- routines/develop work habits and trusting each other, performing-working together to finish the job) a. Know what types of communication characterize each stage 3. Know the three properties of healthy systems (holism- system has to work as a whole, it can’t be good independent individuals, ex Yankees are bad holism, equifinality- different paths can lead to same result, permeability- ability of things to flow through the group, ideas can be presented easily)
