Govt 111: Intro to American Government Natalie Schneider Second Paper Assignment Public Opinion Public opinion polls are an important aspect of the democratic government system. They allow government officials to view and analyze the thoughts, desires, and values of the public, who are the ultimate rulers in a democracy. When considering the fact that the people should rule themselves, there are arguments for both majoritarian and pluralistic models of democracy. Because the majority can favor an act or policy that could hinder the rights and/or interests of members of the minority, national policy decisions do not always follow the majority will. In other words, these situations favor the pluralistic model of democracy where groups are important in making policy. A current example of the situation where the government, namely Congress, should not follow the majority will of the people in creating policy is gun control. A national poll taken in February 2008 by USA Today/Gallup found that a majority of 51%
