Messages of inclusion and affection b. These Same skills are required for Social Integration i. Be friendly, open, and attentive ii. Don’t be dominate the conversation iii. Control non-verbals II. The Need to connection: Socialization a. Definition of Socialization i. Acquisition of the skills, knowledge, values, motives, and roles ii. Appropriate to the individual’s position in a group or society iii. That perpetuates the group and builds cultural values iv. Guiding the member’s self concept v. Socialization is a means of influence vi. The emphasis is on communication competence: understanding the values, motives, and knowledge required and performing those roles necessary to fit in. b. Perceptions of the Communication Climate i. Autonomy: how much individual freedom and flexibility do I have? ii. Structure: who is in charge and how do decisions get made?
