Unformatted text preview: EALC 125g Lecture 29/08/2007 15:45:00 East Asia culturally connected area Cultural Activities going on between China, Japan, and Korea Concept of Nation State modern invention Not natural, concept Started 17 century Government has politically entity and absolute power over one particular, clearly marked boundary not natural concept Continental history of China (mainland) Emperor does not have a clear view or modern concept of nation state Doesnt have authority over a certain part of an area Emperor views himself has center of heaven and universe and oversees all territories from his own point of view (why he has absolute power) Sinocentric View about history and civilization No modern concept of nation state in modern history Korea also doesnt have a clear view of territory and has power over boundaries beyond his own Difference between civilized and barbarian areas This concept nonexistent, so closer relations before concept of nation state Tang Dynasty (7 th century) in china (619-917) approx. culturally interconnected activities going on large scale cultural exchanges this is because Buddhism is emerging and becoming popular because of support of imperial family Buddhism started in India and migrated to China and then spread to Korea and then to Japan Japanese were fascinated with Buddhism and other ancient teachings of China, started sending lots of students to China to learn Buddhism and indigenous Chinese teachings East Asia Culture Sphere or Entity Connection between China and Japan became troubled (up to 1930s ad 40s you could travel with out visa) Expedited in modern history Japan first country to accept western model and reform its political structure and institution with western learning Cultural institutions modeled after the west became first westernized country in east Asia Japan became the model for China and Korea Ancient history, China was the source of Inspiration for Korea and Japan In modern history, situation reversed and Japan became center of inspiration for China and Korea Negative integration of countries Japanese colonizing Korean Peninsula in late imperial china, Korea viewed as part of a territory protected by Chinese Nation state temporary concept No longer sufficient to explain culture flow on a larger scale and on a global level East Asia culture sphere EALC 125 g Lecture 29/08/2007 15:45:00 Contemporary East Asian Cinema and Culture Dr. Shaoyi Sun Chinese Cinema 1949 1976...
