The Ugly American and Three Kings Although both The Ugly American and Three Kings clearly criticize and even satirize American involvement in foreign conflicts, do you think the films also in some ways portray the American political and military presence in a positive light? In other words, do the films strictly condemn, or do they also endorse American culture (ie. values, lifestyle, ideologies)? Citizenship and the various ways we tend to position ourselves within society help us identify who we are as people. Prof. Helfield notes in her lecture that our feelings of identity are institutionalized by two separate groups. One being the framework of society and the other consisting of media and popular culture. In our society, the movie industry tends to convey to the world mostly American ideologies, lifestyles and values because of its predominance in the United States. However, this is not to imply that they are always expressed in a positive light. For the majority of films depicting American culture, tend to concentrate their exertion on the critical and satirical aspects explicitly and the majority of its positive elements in a more subtle manner.
