Ancient Med. History: Class Notes 20/09/2006 10:33:00 -Athens (Ionian) vs. Sparta (Dorian) -Herodotus: grew up during ionian revolt against Persian rule -themes: greeks vs. barbarians (Persians, Egyptians, etc); fascination with  customs, traditions of different ethnicities; interested in ‘firsts’; Spartan  character vs. Athenian; love of dichotomies ‘Histories’ doesn’t follow linear narrative, often circular Book Five: Ionian Revolt o Aristagris (sp?): tyrant of Miletus, son of Histaeus; Persian backing,  Histaeus taken to Persian empire o Persian tendency to incorporate local elite of conquered peoples into  court, power structure o Aristagris left in power, looks for Greek allies to oust Persians -> goes  to Spartan, Athenians go to help begin revolt o Begins with Aristagris helping to plan Persian invasion of Greece via  Naxos; falling out bw Miletians and Persians, now Aristagris starts
