Social Control -Individuals in society are all subject to social control -Informally, like negative peer evaluations -“That dress is way to skimpy…” -Formally, like a punitive criminal justice response to violation of law -Social control illustrates social organization through deviance and crime What is deviance? -Labeling -Control -Learning -Mental illness -Mood disorders -Substance use -Non violent crime -White collar crime -Sexual deviance -Coyote- “call off your old tired ethics” -supports prostitution Sociology of Deviance -Not so much on why people violate norms… -But how social systems produee deviance and patterns of deviance -Homicide rates -Suicide rates -Cheating rates at Universities -These patterns are descriptive of social categories within particular social systems -Suicide/homicide rates of men/women -What are the explanations? -Social conditions of these categories Early Theoretical Approaches -Biological -Lombroso -Ativism: evolutionary throwback (not completely evolved) -Tough guise showed that violent criminality (US) is overwhelmingly male -Psychological -Deviance is the result of insufficient or unsuccessful socialization *neither of these can explain how, when and why something becomes defined as deviant in the first place Deviance: Career of a concept (Best, 2003) -Precursors -anomie
