1 Community An assemblage of species that occur together in space and time Community ecology seeks to determine whether there are natural rules that structure communities, and if so what those rules are and how they apply Communities change across space Due to the interaction between individual species and the abiotic environment, communities (collections of species) change across a landscape (gradient analysis) – latitude – altitude differences reflecting historical factors – availability of water – soil type – competing species Figure 16.6, page 475 Community boundaries are NOT sharp Individual species have variably overlapping boundaries (see “c” in the previous slide) Thus, communities grade into each other gradually (thus the term “ gradient ” analysis) How do we define a community, then?
