1 Community • An assemblage of species that occur together in space and time • Community ecology seeks to determine whether there are natural rules that structure communities, and if so what those rules are and how they apply Communities change across space • Due to the interaction between individual species and the abiotic environment, communities (collections of species) change across a landscape (gradient analysis) – latitude – altitude – differences reflecting historical factors – availability of water – soil type – competing species Figure 16.6, page 475 Community boundaries are NOT sharp • Individual species have variably overlapping boundaries (see “c” in the previous slide) • Thus, communities grade into each other gradually (thus the term “ gradient ” analysis) • How do we define a community, then?
