Model code – one written by a group of experts knowledgeable is the field w/o any ref to a particular geographic area UBC – uniform building code used in western and central us BOCA – national building code, used in north east SBC – standard building code, by southern building congress, used in southeast CABO – national code, ICC is working on an International Building Code for 2000 Performance based – all models above are – not prescriptive, describes how it is to function, instead of required spec mats, Least acceptable risk – min level required for a building and occupant safety even though just meeting the code Adjuncts to the codes With exception to electrical, they are usually written by the same people Electrical used by all groups is national electric code by NFPA (national fire protection association) Model codes use industry standards etc developed by such people as ASTM (American society for testing and materials ESPTABLISHES STANDARD SPECS FOR MATERIALS ANSI (American national standards institute STANDARDS FOR INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS WINDOWS ETX.
