Chapter 6: Groups and Organizations Bystander apathy - People shy away from behavior to avoid being noticed - Absence of clearly defined responsibility in crowd = people likely to avoid helping others McDonalization – fast food – Model for Rationalization 1. Efficiency 2. Predictability 3. Calculability 4. Non-human technology – take skills away from people Social Groups 1. Must have more than one person 2. Must identify and interact with one another Categories – group of individuals that hold a common status 1. Not a social group 2. Ex. male/female, race 3. Not interacting with anyone Crowds – social aggregate 1. Temporary cluster of individuals 2. May or may not interact with others 3. Typically have common identity 4. Usually too weak to be a social group 5. Overtime bonds may develop and form group Primary and Secondary Groups - defined based on size, purpose, and types of exchange in groups 1. Primary group – small group that has long-lasting, enduring relationships a. Emotional attachment b. Spend lots of time together c. Loyal, concerned d. Ex. family, peer groups e. Members are defined by who you are as an individual 2. Secondary group – large groups that are impersonal and task oriented a. Obtain a certain purpose b. No personal intimacy like primary c. Weak relationships d. Goal-oriented e. Relationships defined by class or task f. Ex. classroom students g. Members are defined by what they do Transformation of Secondary Group - Over time, certain members (portion of group, not whole group) can form primary group - Doesn’t go other way from primary to secondary Society and Primary Groups 1. Pre-industrial society = usually only primary groups existed 2. Industrial and Post-industrial society = majority of social arrangements based on secondary groups Studies of Group Conformity 1. The Ash Study a. Group pressure has ability to shape behavior b/c we want acceptance from social group b. Don’t want discomfort of others thinking you are wrong c. In 1/3 of all cases, research subjects conformed and agreed to the wrong thing. d.
