History 1001 January 25, 2008 I. Egypt Built around Nile River Lots of early writing Very reliant on river – Nile begins in south and flows northward delta empties into Mediterranean Sea o Lower Egypt = delta region (actually in North) o Upper Egypt = in south The Nile was very navigable – winds blew southward could travel in both directions Tigris and Euphrates were dangerous – not big routes of transportation Nile was major travel river There was not much rain because of desert climate – relied on river for agriculture The Nile flooded regularly – very predictable In the late summer, the Nile overflowed its banks slowly. It was easy to plan around – used for crop irrigation There were no flashfloods like in Mesopotamia Egypt surrounded by harsh deserts only point of invasion was the delta (which was well-protected) Geography caused stability – one civilization (Egyptians) One single ruling dynasty created unified, cohesive civilization that lasts from 3000 BC – 1000 BC
