Hittites 3000 BC; height of empire = 1600 BC Anatolia = Asia Minor = modern Turkey 1475 – 1200 BC = Hittite Empire First and earliest Indo-European group Anatolia o Non-river civilization o Located in a mountain region o Not part of arid Mesopotamia and Egypt o Lots of rainfall for crops Don’t need rivers Smaller scale farming and herding o Water on 3 sides (civilization centered around trading with Egyptians, Hebrews, Mesopotamians, Philistines, and Greece o Early capital = Hattushas o Hittite political system has high king but he depends on local nobility Not as much power as other kings (unlike Pharaohs) o Cities and regions linked together by trade and treaties o Used cuneiform to write on clay tablets got idea from Mesopotamia (points to close ties) o polytheistic religion – “people of 1000 gods” shares the god, “Ashur” – Mesopotamian influence code of Hammurabi appears too o 1650 – height of empire
