Initially leisurely o Best known for his ten symphonies Very long in terms of instrumental forces Symphonies of a thousand, huge orchestra, huge chorus Over 90 minutes long o Keen ear to create different timbre o Made his living more as a conductor than a composer o Wrote music during his summer vocation o Director of Vienna Opera, New York Film “Harmonic” o 50 minutes, shortest of his symphonies o Film composers have ripped off Mahler Whole bed of sound definitely used a lot Star Trek o Considered symphony a big world that encompassed all kinds of music o 4 movements total Symphony No. 1 in D minor [1888] o “High” vs. “low” art Co-exist in Mahler’s work High symphonic traditions with low Folk music
