On liberty - john stuart mill The entire essay is based upon showing mills point of view and how he believes that liberty is something that should be observed by all individuals and should only be infringed in order to prevent harm to others. - To protect a person from himself is not a valid reason to interfere with ones liberty - Only in a case where a persons actions creates an evil that emanates onto others can force against liberty be used - The appropriate region of human liberty refers to the actions of a person that affects only the person himself, and even if the effects do move on to others, they should be due to the voluntary consent of those individuals - Liberty is made up of liberty of conscience, liberty of thought and feeling, absolute freedom of opinion. - We are allowed to do what we please under the laws of liberty, even if our actions might seem foolish to others (as long as we don’t harm others) - Freedom to unite is also part of our liberty, as long as there is no harm to others, and all participants are of age and are not forced. - A society that does not respect the rights of liberty is not in whole a free society. - One should be allowed to have and express his or her opinion freely, despite whether it is popular opinion, or whether only a single individual believes in it. - If one is deprived of the right to an opinion, he is deprived of the right to spread his opinion to others, if it was right, and if it was wrong, then he has lost the right to gain an understanding of what the truth was - An opinion should never be suppressed since it might be right, and since no one
