1 Answers to Chapter 7 End of Chapter Questions 1. What are the effects on metamorphic minerals and textures of temperature, confining pressure, and differential stress? Temperature increases rates of chemical reactions, therefore increasing the temperature on a rock may cause chemical reactions to occur which result in the formation of a metamorphic rock. Commonly, minerals formed at high metamorphic temperatures are coarser grained than minerals formed a lower metamorphic temperatures. In addition, higher temperatures tend to “dry” rocks out…therefore, metamorphic minerals formed at high temperatures generally are anhydrous (do not contain water or (OH) - in their chemical formulas). Thus clays (very hydrous) change to micas (somewhat hydrous), micas change to amphiboles (less hydrous than micas), and amphiboles change to pyroxenes (completely anhydrous).
