2 Kaitlyn A. Herthel A student’s motivation for a task determines the participation and the success for his or her involvement with that activity. Motivation is the process whereby goal-directed activity is instigated and sustained. 1 If a student has no desire to do a task, he or she will not give it his or her full effort or will not complete it at all, reflecting poorly on the student’s ability. A person’s level of motivation for a specific task is determined by different factors, including individual differences, self-efficacy, the attribution theory and intrinsic motivation. The level of engagement for an activity is determined by one of the preceding theories. Throughout my educational career to date, I have always been motivated by art. On the other hand, I have never been motivated to participate in science-related activities. Throughout this paper, I will explain the reasons for motivation by looking at two specific activities- one which motivates me and one that does not. I will examine the reasons why I am motivated by visual, mental and physical realms of art but not by the conceptual and physical notions of science. I will seek to share with the reader why my motivation is so high for one area, yet lacking for the other. Motivation energizes and directs behavior. Features of the task lead to different directions of motivation. For example, integrating sports into a math topic can gain the attention of a football player who never understood math, motivating him or her to understand the topic in relation to the game. Teachers can appeal to students who are not motivated intrinsically or who have issues with self-efficacy by “tricking” them into learning. Students with low self-efficacy often do not believe that they can accomplish an assignment, which ultimately results in their willingness to attempt the task.
