Immigrant from rural Italy or Eastern Europe now working in a northern city. 1905. -working woman, husband hurt at work, no worker’s compensation -tenements- slums in New York City where rent was high and living conditions low; overpopulation. Grouped by class rather than ethnicity. -NY applied light, ventilation and safety codes in 1867, 1879, 1901 (523) -better living conditions than Italy -work in clothing industry, low-skilled jobs. Overworked and low standards, underpaid. -‘family wages’- entire family expected to work to make enough money to live -subway tunnels -intending to return to Italy with more money to live comfortably and securely -came here looking for jobs, pushed from troubled home economies, political/religious regions -don’t know the language or the religion (Italian Catholic)- made immigrants seem more alien -focus on family life. Provide family income, and tend to the home and family. -trying to help family coming from Italy financially, while stilly trying to remain alive and relatively comfortable -received financial aid from Charity Organization Societies, who deemed them to be “deserving poor” and encouraged them to be “thriftier and more virtuous” (524) -Changing culture -melting pot-trying to maintain culture while fitting in with American cultural necessities. Once categorized by home town, now simplified to being ‘Italian’
