STUDY GUIDE LABS 1-5 Review your post-labs and my PPTs and then check if you covered all the things mentioned in this study guide. CHAPTER #1 1. Benedict’s test Tests for monosaccharides and some disacharides, which have a free aldahydehyde group. Color change is red/orange from the blue oxidized form. Sucrose does not have a free aldehyde group 2. Iodine (Lugol’s) test Tests for Cellulose and Starch (polysaccharides). Positive tests are blue/brown and negative is yellow or brown. 3. Sudan test Tests for lipids. Tests for their hydrocarbon chains. Color change will be an orange stain 4. Biuret test Tests for proteins. Tests the amino groups and the color change is violet You have to know what each of these test detects, the color changes (what is “+” and what is “-“) and functional groups . CHAPTER #2 - What are enzymes, how do they work, what affects their activity - Everything about peroxidase and those experiments that we did (concentration, temperature, pH, boiling and inhibitors)
