Josh Capps Comm 111-07 5/7/2009 Outline for Informative Speech Name: Joshua Capps Date: October 4, 2007 Topic: The Day of the Dead General Purpose: To inform. Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about the history and rituals of The Day of the Dead Central Idea: The Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday with a rich tradition and history and huge following to this day. Introduction: I have a scenario for you to imagine. Its midnight and you along with your entire family leave your candle-lit house and begin to walk down the street towards the cemetery. As you reach the cemetery your direction changes slightly and you begin to head directly to the grave of a deceased family member. Then what? In our society this would be considered a time for prayer, reflection and peace, but in Mexico during the celebrations of The Day of the Dead the mood would be the total opposite. I first began to study this ancient holiday in high school and continued my studies last spring in my Modern Languages 260 class, in which I wrote a research paper. In my speech I am going to tell you about the history of The Day of the Dead, its meaning today and how it is celebrated throughout Mexico. Preview Statement:
