Josh Capps The Day of the Dead The Day of the Dead is an ancient celebration having roots that trace back to civilizations that existed almost 3000 years ago. Of the many different civilizations that existed in ancient Mexico, the Aztec, Maya, Nahua and Totonac have all been observed celebrating the lives of their ancestors. These civilizations continued to flourish with their celebrations throughout time all the way up to modern days. Although the celebration has lasted thousands of years, there were rocky times that these indigenous people encountered. One of these was whenever the Spanish conquistadors attempted to eradicate their celebrations in attempts of converting them to Christianity while also eliminating their civilization altogether. The Day of the Dead is most prominently celebrated in cities throughout Mexico. The celebrations last from October 31 st until November 2 nd . They celebrate Halloween on October 31 st , All Saints’ Day on November 1 st and All Souls’ Day on November 2
