Unformatted text preview: Nikolai Gogols Dead Souls & Fyodor Dostoevskys The Brothers Karamazov Gogol Celebrates the Everyday Man, The Working Soul. While in the same breath, Gogol tears down the corrupt banality of the landowner who lives off of others souls. These countrymen and women love the life they live, however meager, and Gogol exalts their hearts and their loves. The Anti-Hero Tchitchikov is the classic anti-hero who in his wickedness shows the kindness of others. The nature of the Russian human character is revealed through the exposition of poor Tchitchikovs we see a country filled with passion for life. Gogols Dead Souls The buying and selling of souls, dead or alive, is a morbid topic. Whether the merchandising of dead souls actually occurred is almost irrelevant to the deeper issue presented by Gogol; the value of human life. This is something he obviously struggled with. Still, the main character in Gogols novel has no qualms with the buying up of these dead souls so as to become a landowner. Gogols...
