Sleep Cycle . Research has shown that there are five stages of sleep labeled one, two, three, four, and REM sleep. About “50 percent of our total sleep time in stage 2 sleep, about 20 percent in REM sleep, and the remaining 30 percent in the other stages.”(National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) The stages of sleep continuously cycle throughout the night.

The food and medicine that a person ingests throughout the day change the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain, recalling that neurotransmitters affect whether a person feels drowsy or awake. Caffeinated products are a main culprit in diminishing quality sleep, these products stimulate parts of the brain that hurt the brains ability to initiate sleep or maintain sleep.
