Remember – April 6th- OlderVirtue:Joy—finding a way to be happy, even when things don’t go your way.Memory Verse:“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”Philippians 4:4,NIVBible Story:Remember (The Last Supper) •Luke 22:7-20Bottom Line:When things seem bad, remember what Jesus said.Power Up: Engage the Heart (20-25 minutes)LEADERS:Fourth and Fifth graders realize life isn’t smooth and easy. They’re beginning to understand thatthere are those who are much less fortunate. They can grasp the impact of tornadoes andhurricanes, earthquakes and tsunamis. They’ve heard of incredibly cruel people who stalk othersand commit murder and prey on the weak. By fifth grade, frankly, life has gotten scary. What bettertime, then, to help them understand what deep, true joy is and how to attain it? (1) Joy is finding away to be happy, even when things don’t go your way. (2) God wants us to have joy. This isdemonstrated by His generous offer of eternal life despite our sinful nature. (3) As we mature inChrist enough to rejoice even when things are bad, (4) those around us are going to sit up andtake notice that there’s something different about us. And when that happens, we’ll be able to helpchange the world.Pray for your kids and for yourself, as you prepare for this week’s lesson.Worship1. Get StartedHOST:“Hey, there! Today is the first Sunday in April, and we have a new virtue we’re talking aboutthis month. It’s JOY! We also have a new verse. It says …Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say itagain: Rejoice!]That’s from Philippians 4:4(NIV).Is it just me or does that verse remind you ofyour mom? ‘Clean your room. I will say it again: Clean your room!’ Or, ‘Do your homework. I willsay it again: Do your homework!’ Paul was in jail when he wrote Philippians, so maybe he wasthinking of his dear old mom when he penned that verse. But let’s get back to joy. Raise your handand give me some synonyms for the word ‘joy.’You’ll likely hear words such as ‘delight,’ ‘happiness,’‘pleasure,’ ‘bliss,’ etc.“Great answers, everyone! Thanks! Now, raise your hand if you’re still trying to figure out what asynonym is.(Pause.)Hmm …“Anyway, all month we’re going to use this definition for joy: finding a way to be happy, even whenthings don’t go your way. Have any of you ever had something NOT go your way?(Pause.)Ofcourse! We’ve all experienced that. The trick is finding a way to be happy anyway. All month we’regoing to have some special help looking for joy.”2. Set the Stage for the Bible LessonHOST:“Let’s review what we talked about last month. We spent the month learning about courage, and we said that at one point Jesus went to the Mount of Olives and prayed. He didn’t want to die,
but He ended His prayer by saying, ‘Not my will, but yours be done’(Luke 22:42b, NIV).Shortlyafter that, Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss and Jesus was arrested.”HOST:“Over the next few hours, Jesus was questioned by Pilate, beaten, mocked, questioned byHerod, harassed, and mocked some more. Finally he was condemned to a cruel death bycrucifixion.”HOST:“After Jesus died, His body was wrapped in strips of cloth and placed in a tomb. A large, heavy stone was rolled over the opening. But on Sunday morning when some women went to thetomb, they found the stone was rolled away and the tomb was empty.
