2Technology’s Impact on HumanityTechnology’s impact on humanity can be seen throughout world. From the impacts ofnuclear fission, space rockets, and smartphones, to artificial intelligence. Technology continuesto shape and change the world and our culture in irreversible ways. This paper will examine theimpacts the three forementioned technological advancements and the impacts they have had onsociety. It will examine the future of technology and how it will continue to shape the lives ofhumanity.Technology from Nuclear FissionIn December 1938, physicists Lise Meitner and Otto Frisch discovered nuclear fission.Physicists hit a large nucleus like uranium with neutrons and discovered the nucleus split apart ina process labeled fission. This process produced enormous amounts of energy and efforts soonbegan to create the world’s first nuclear bomb and soon after was used to create nuclear reactorsfor generating enormous amounts of energy to produce electricity, (Chodos et al., 2007, p. 2).The atomic bomb has had catastrophic effects on the world. In World War II the United Stateslaunched two nuclear bombs against Japan to force a quick surrender and put an end to the war.The exact death toll is unknown, but it is believed anywhere from 130,000 to 200,000 peopledied from the bombing, (History.com Editors, 2009). After the war, nuclear energy was used tocreate nuclear power plants. As of 2011, the United States had around 100 nuclear reactors andapproximately 15 percent of the world’s energy came from nuclear power plants. Nuclear powerplants produce clean energy and the water used to cool the reactors is reused to produce moreenergy. However, the reactors do produce byproduct of radioactive material that must be
