Approach to minimum contacts analysis 1.  Purposeful availment - look only at the defendant's activities to see if the defendant has purposefully availed himself of jurisdiction in the forum by asking such questions as: International Shoe: the circumstances of their commission sufficient to render the corporation liable to suit in the forum Purchases and related trips, standing alone, are not a sufficient basis for a state’s assertion of general jurisdiction.  (Helicopteros Nacionales de Colombia, S.A. v. Hall, 466 U.S. 408 (1984) Burger King: of the forum state? Did the defendant enter into a long term relationship with a forum resident? The federal courts must use the long arm statute of the state in which the court is located. A contract alone will not suffice as a minimum contact. It is just one of the things which must be consider What were the negotiations like? What does the contract actually say? What happens post contract? Choice of law clause may be considered in determining whether the defendant has minimum con World Wide Volkswagen: The unilateral act of a plaintiff in bringing a product to the forum (WWV)  or relocating in the forum is (Hanson v. Deckla) insufficient to establish purposeful ava will be purchased by consumers in the forum state?
