The authors of this article feel that the reasons for the ethical dilemma within our own
food production system are firstly that society’s values are not immutable but change
over time. For example, being gay was something that used to be completely
unacceptable, however, now is much more accepted. Laws have been passed to even
give them the privilege of marriage. Secondly, new technologies have unexpected
consequences. For example, in technology we have many machines that make things
way less costly and much more efficient, but this results in a higher unemployment
because people are being replaced by these machines. Lastly, new ideas can and do
enter our moral worlds. For example, a long time ago people valued the treatment of
the animals they were eating because they were the ones raising them. Now, people do
not seem to care what hormones are injected or their way of life, as long as it is
convenient for them.
